Expansive country folk rock, slick swing jazz, and gutsy R&B wind into vineyards this week as Folktale Winery continues to cement its position as a player in the local music scene.
Local favorite Casey Frazier opens the festivities on Friday. Citing roots as divergent as country and ’70s rock, Frazier peppers classics and originals with a piercingly clear tenor voice.
“There’s something about that lonesome cowboy feeling that draws people in,” says Frazier. “It’s a good dynamic.”
The night after Frazier comes the Andrea Carter Duo, featuring Carter with guitarist Darrin Michell. Seen locally since 1995 at Sunday brunch at Carmel’s Cypress Inn, Carter is a consummate jazz vocalist able to reach into diverse non-jazz idioms ranging from the Beatles and Stones to the Drifters and Mose Allison.
Following Carter’s gig comes the next installment of the monthly Live in the Vines series next Tuesday. The brainchild of KRML General Manager and Program Director Jeff White, the series seeks out musicians who sit on the brink of becoming household names.
“We want to have people bragging about how they saw an act – before they were well-known – in a working wine barrel room in Carmel Valley,” White says. This month’s installment offers up singer/songwriter Anderson East, whose latest Elektra release Delilah boasts two breakout singles, Devil in Me, on which East’s voice resembles Tom Waits without the gravel, together with some serious blue-eyed R&B on his Satisfy Me.
“We want to do this for a long time,” White adds. Local music lovers hope that’s precisely what happens.
