The $500 top prize that’ll go to the 2015 Battle of the Bands winner will be nice. But it might be dwarfed in value by the title itself. It will look quite nice on one young band’s website or Facebook page. Here are the contenders after the honor:
Folsom Youth: Kristin Sollecito (vocals), Rachel Spung (guitar), Emily Muller-Foster (bass), Kim Sollecito (drums) form an all-girl rock outfit that’s already become somewhat of a familiar name around town, performing on several local bills over the past year with favorites like The Pip Squeeks and Valley Soul. The quartet delivers crunchy, California-tinged garage rock. “Velvet” sounds like it could be the lovechild of Dick Dale and The Kinks with an early ’90s grunge sensibility. The quartet also unleash a killer lo-fi rendition of “House of the Rising Sun.”
Glass House: Meagan Hoch (vocals, rhythm guitar), Wesley Kise (guitar), Bryce Bishop (bass) and Bagel Nagel (drums) form Glass House, which enjoyed its debut Feb. 27 at East Village. The teen foursome’s recently-released single “Rubber Band (What Remains)” stirs a blend of raw, melodic and psych – think pre-Soft Bulletin Flaming Lips.
J-Arrow: Singer-songwriter Jacob Gomez, a grad of Samz School of Music, is doing the solo thing. Just the 17-year-old and an acoustic guitar against the world.
Admisity: Freddy Gonzalez (guitar, vocals), Jocelyn Valenzuela (bass), Rafael Centu (drums) make up a Salinas trio which began as an acoustic project, and represents another product of Samz School. “I can’t play just one type of genre or style,” Gonzalez says. “I like to mix it up a little and show that I’m open and that my music is written to how I feel.”
Mental Musk: Yvan Vucina (guitar), Noah Cryns (guitar), Eliot Chesebrough (bass), Patrick Kelly (drums) deploy a vigorous storm of ’70s metal and glam. The quartet recently blew minds at Good Old Days and Somos Gallery in Salinas.
Operation Rock: Brothers Frank Campo (drums), Chris Campo (guitar) and John Campo (lead singer), joined forces with fellow Monterey residents Billy Lynch (keys) and Joe Johnson (bass) at Dennis Murphy’s School of Music. They have been gigging non-stop since, from Festa Italia to Carmel Plaza’s Summer Music Series. At 11-15 years old, this is just the beginning for Op Rock. Right now, their specialty is classic rock covers, from Deep Purple to Tom Petty.
The future from here, for all of these groups, is uncertain. But it’s certainly promising.
