Western Stage gets ready to launch SpringFEST.

Western Stage’s SpringFEST theater season lets the company change its game plan in all kinds of ways. Instead of focusing on a few fully-produced plays and musicals that stretch out for weeks, it’s a barrage of different stuff nearly every weekend, from now through April. It’s cheaper than the regular season. And they bring in all kinds of new talents to bear.

In March they’re doing Miss Electricity, a short comedy by Kathryn Walat about a 10-year-old who gains superpowers. The end of the run of nine works is EMMA! A Pop Musical by Eric Price, an adaptation of the Jane Austen novel set to music by Katy Perry, Salt-n-Pepa, The Ronettes, Avril Lavigne, etc.

But they start off with three epistolary plays, or works in the form of letters. The first is Letters from Cuba by Maria Irene Fornes, about creativity, love and dreams, traced in letters between a dancer in New York and her poet brother in Cuba.

“I have taken an approach of directing this beautiful play as if staging a story ballet or poetic reading,” says director Sam Trevino via email. He’ll incorporate music, dance, lighting, video and the actors’ abilities to create the two worlds and invoke the different guises of love.

Next is A.R. Gurney’s popular and sentimental Love Letters, a 50-year romance told through letters between a man and woman. Then to close out the month of Valentine’s Day isDear Elizabeth by Sarah Ruhl, about the relationship and poetry of Robert Lowell and Elizabeth Bishop, culled from 400 of their letters.

Almost every play runs for only two days so there’s not much time to deliberate. But priced at $5 to $10 to $0 per show, it’s not a pricey risk, so it’s a good time to take a chance.
