Two theater works localize the New Age of women's empowerment.

Amazon Studios’ web TV series Transparent recently sent its three leading women characters (one of whom is transgender) to a women’s festival in the woods headlined by the Indigo Girls and occupied by encampments representing a variety of women’s empowerment, including mystical ritual, nudity, folk music, S&M and political insularity, all in the so-called “safe space” of those private woods.

Two works of theater are coming to Monterey County this weekend that mimic some of that atmosphere.

Western Stage’s Studio Theater hosts Singing the Body Electric, an amalgamation of insights into aging naturally and ageism, self-image versus those imposed on women, and something called “female body ecology,” bearing resemblance to The Vagina Monologues.

It is such a group effort the four collaborators respond to email questions as a group, in one voice: “It is a poetic and visual exploration of the struggles and joys of being a woman – physical, emotional, ecological… a rough script, weaving in multiple narratives.”

The other work is called YoniVerse Monologues: True Stories of Courageous Women. Yoni means vagina or womb in Sanskrit, and refers to the Hindu goddess of womanhood. This work, from storyteller, mentor and director Sirena Andrea, draws a direct parallel to the works of Eve Ensler and her Vagina Monologues and enlists nine women, some local, to perform their stories in a “safe and supportive” environment.

“Being in a circle of women has returned me to my truth,” says one participant in a video interview on the YoniVerse Monologues website.

Circles can also be enclosed. Expect this one to let audiences in.
