The city of Carmel is throwing a parade at 10:40am Saturday, Oct. 29, in honor of its 100th birthday, with floats, performers, Clint Eastwood as grand marshall, and even a score composed by Alan Silvestri. The parade winds its way to Sunset Center where a private patio luncheon awaits those with invites.
If you’re not on that list, don’t fret. The Center for Photographic Art, a Carmel institution worthy of celebration itself, will be open and serving up a reception to receive parade-goers and to show off their fourth annual fundraising group exhibition called 8x10.
It’s made up of 8-by-10-inch photos from dozens of the region’s esteemed fine art photographers, like Ted Orland, Roman Loranc, Holly Roberts, Wyn and Edna Bullock and Kim and Zach Weston.
“We don’t really screen the images,” says CPA Assistant Director Rick Murai. “We allow the photographers the creative freedom to choose their best pieces.”
They got an especially diverse crop of photos this year, Murai adds. Archival inkjet prints and platinum silver gelatin prints, ambrotype and daguerreotype (photographic processes from the 1800s), color and black-and-white, digital and film, portraits and landscapes, street and documentary, wildlife and architectural.
CPA Director Brian Taylor even has a 3D piece, a photo-illustrated handmade book housed in a frame. But he turns the attention to other works in the show.
Like Dinh Danh’s daguerreotype of Yosemite, or a darkroom gelatin silver black-and-white print by Roman Loranc – “a beautiful, subtly toned image of a window, very spiritual aesthetic,” Taylor says.
The photographic prints are all up for raffle through Nov. 6. You just need $10 and a little luck to score big.
