A middle-aged woman stands in the middle of a college locker room, surrounded by hulking young men. She presents a simple request: “Raise your hand if you think there’s a problem.” A majority of hands go up.
The subject at hand: how young women are treated on university campuses across the country.
A montage of news stories – from Vanderbilt, Boise State, Stanford – has led many to think the source of the problem is locker rooms like this one. But she’s not buying it and says, “The whole world is talking about you like you’re the problem. I just so happen to believe you’re the cure.”
ProtectHer is one of three world premieres in this year’s Carmel International Film Festival, which runs Oct. 18-22 at multiple venues in Carmel. The groundbreaking accompanies a first-of-its-kind sexual assault prevention program that targets student-athletes as champions of change.
The second world premiere is Make Love Great Again, a love-story drama. The third is Logan’s Syndrome, about a painter named Logan who suffers from autism along with an extremely rare genetic disorder. The film depicts how he comes to terms with his disability through painting provocative images and pursues his dream of becoming a professional artist.
Film fest co-founder Tom Burns aptly describes the festival as “a celebration of the arts in a town that has a tradition of honoring creative endeavors.” CIFF screens a variety of films, and hosts Q&A panels, live music and – if you’ve got the cash ($195) – plenty of VIP parties. While it won’t live up to a festival like Cannes, it still has a red carpet, overpriced cocktails and sandy beaches.
