For five years, Bruce Ariss Wharf Theater proprietor Angelo DiGirolamo (who is 92 blessed years old) hosted Broadway: A Musical, a rollicking community theater show comprised of popular musical numbers. But last year he gave the coveted summer slot to Ken Cusson’s Saltshaker Theater to put on a steampunk version of Gilbert & Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore.
“I made money,” DiGirolamo says. “Can you imagine? After 37 years I can say that.”
So, understandably, he’s giving Saltshaker the space again this summer for an eight-week run of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado, July 12-Aug. 31.
Enter Pacific Repertory Theater, which picks up the torch for their own version, Hello, Broadway!, featuring 25 hit songs, starting this Thursday. Local theater veterans Reg Huston, Gracie Poletti, Scott McQuiston and Lydia Lyons are joined for guest spots by former Met mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer.
“There are a lot of Broadway revues out there,” says Stephen Moorer, PacRep’s founder and executive director. “There are so many songs to choose from [so] everybody’s revue can be different – love songs, diva laments, showbiz songs, duets. We wanted to present a range of iconic songs, from the ’40s and ’50s to today.”
They reach back and polish off the syrupy “Some Enchanted Evening” from South Pacific, the fast-talking “You Got Trouble” from Music Man and the adorable “Take Back Your Mink” from Guys and Dolls.
From there it moves into material from shows including Man of La Mancha, Little Shop of Horrors, Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Young Frankenstein, Chicago, Wicked and the sold-out-everywhereBook of Mormon.
The two-hour show has an interesting connection to an earlier show Pac Rep did called Forbidden Broadway, which was takeoffs of famous Broadway tunes, like “On My Phone” as a spoof of Les Miserables’ “On My Own.” Here’s the twist: The four main singers are the same. This time they’re doing original and faithful versions of the ones they tweaked fun with in Forbidden Broadway. This time, instead of tongues in cheeks, hearts are on sleeves.
HELLO, BROADWAY! runs 7:30pm Thu-Sat (except July 4), 2pm Sun, through July 27, at Golden Bough Playhouse, Monte Verde between Eighth and Ninth, Carmel. $20-$39. 622-0100, www.pacrep.org.

I hate to break this to you, but Saltshaker has nothing to do with The Mikado and they also did not take over the summer slot last year. Last summer, Pirates of Penzance was produced by Angelo. Pinafore was produced by Cusson, but it was in the spring of 2014.
