• On Sunday, PacRep’s Encore Film Series presents “A Dancer’s Dream” – a collaboration between New York Philharmonic Musical Director Alan Gilbert and genius production team Giants Are Small. Blending music and dance, live animation, pre-recorded video, puppetry and circus arts, “Dream” brings two of Stravinsky’s ballet scores to life amidst a fantastical Russian carnival buried in a blizzard. It’s an “über fairy tale” that will delight fans of both Stravinsky and the surreal. The film also features behind-the-scenes footage, as well as an intermission feature on Stravinsky’s history with the New York Philharmonic, with video and other never-before-seen material from the New York Philharmonic Digital Archives. The film begins at 7pm at the Golden Bough Theatre on June 22 ($24/general; $20/ seniors; $12/student/teacher/military; $7.50/children under 12). Call 622-0100 or www.pacrep.org for more.
• Earlier this year, the 2014 Robinson Jeffers Tor House Prize for Poetry was announced. I suggest you give the winning poem, Rob Carney’s “Seven Circles in The Book of Sharks,” a read. It updates Jeffers’ themes. Read it here: http://www.torhouse.org/prize.htm.
• Also, if you have yet to peruse the ever-expanding catalogue of Adam Zerbe’s local label, 4th Street Records, I suggest you visit www.4thstrecords.com. Artists such as Nico Georis, Larry Hosford,Matt Baldwin and Walter Rose have produced some really incredible albums.
• What’s my favorite YouTube channel? Easily MBARI’s feeds from their remotely operated submersibles. You can spend hours watching crystal clear images of bizarre and entrancing dramas play out at the bottom of the ocean. Watch a squid fight to eat an owlfish, discover mystifyingly elegant, alien creatures and learn about ocean chemistry and climate change. Check out all the action here: www.youtube.com/user/MBARIvideo.
• Although the event is not until July 5, I recommend you buy tickets to Esalen’s world music festival soon – the Big Sur institute’s annual summer celebration sells out quickly. This year’s festival features world music artists Orgone, Benyoro, Lagos Roots and Emily Elbert. It also includes special guests 7 COME 11, Sadza Marimba and Yoga with Hannah Muse. Gates open at 1 pm and the event ends at sunset. The $80 ticket includes music, dinner and access to the hot springs. Good deal. Children ages 12 years or younger enter free with parents or guardians. For tickets and registration, visit www.pulseproductions.net.
