Myron Oliver

All four exhibits that comprise Monterey Museum of Art’s summer offering are now on display. The piece shown above, “Old Custom House, Monterey, California” was painted by Myron Oliver (1891-1967) in 1934. It is part of A Visual History of Art and Architecture in Monterey, a show curated by local artist Joaquin Turner and art historian Cynthia Wagner Weick. Oliver was born to a muralist and portrait painter father, became an “unemployed artist,” as he described himself early on while registering for a military draft, and became very active in Carmel, at some point serving as the Carmel Art Association’s president. The exhibit explores Monterey’s art and architectural traditions and is up until Aug. 30. MMA is located at 559 Pacific St., Monterey, open 11am-5pm Thursday-Sunday.
