"Bird Sunset" by Larry Contreras

• It was looking like the Carmel Valley Library, housed in the onetime Buckeye Restaurant, might have to move after the 4,300-square foot buildling was put on the market. But that’s changed with the sale of the building to Central Valley real estate investment company WLKST Partners, LP, and the 15-year lease they’ve signed with the library. The rent’s gone up (from almost $5,000 to almost $6,000), but so will renovations, parking and future stability. 659-2377.

• Seaside’s Peace Resource Center is now called the Monterey Peace and Justice Center. The fact that it’s not actually in Monterey is semantics. The work that happens inside the homey little spot is what’s important. Like the community forum and potluck hosted by the Civil Rights Coalition for Jail Reform-Monterey County and the local NAACP, dubbed “California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation: Could it actually do what its name suggests?” It’s moderated by Helen Rucker and happens 2-4pm on Sunday. Call 915-7257 or 899-7322, or go to www.MontereyNAACP.org for more.

• Sacramento’s Crocker Museum is putting on a big painting retrospective called David Ligare: California Classicist, made up of almost 80 works and accompanied by a big, bountiful catalog. The show’s up and open June 7 to Sept. 20, with a symposium with Ligare coming July 18. 916-808-7000, www.CrockerArtMuseum.org.

• While in Sacramento… last December, I wrote an Arts & Culture blog about the diorama displays in the State Capitol building that represent each of California’s 58 counties – and how Monterey County’s diorama looked like it could use some creative attention. And now it’s going to get some. The Arts Council for Monterey County, the Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau and Monterey County Economic Development are soliciting for teams of artists to create a new 3-dimensional diorama that will “capture the essence of Monterey County” using the slogan “Grab life by the moments.” The winning design will go on display at the Capitol and the winning team will receive $2,500. Submit your idea ($35) by June 14. Visit www.arts2mc.org, email klara@arts4mc.org or call 622-9060 for info.

• They’re not the only local organizations wanting your input. Pacific Grove Art Center is asking for small, donated works of art for their Tiny Treasures fundraising raffle. It’s open to all mediums, not larger than 7 inches by 9 inches by 7 inches. The deadline is June 19; the show opens July 3. 375-2208.
