Mozart, the Influencer
Musikiwest presents another evening of music by the greatest “influencer” of all time – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This concert features Jessie Fellows, Katie Kadarauch and Musikiwest’s artistic director, Michelle Djokic. Opening is Bohuslav Martinu’s “Three Madrigals” and Zoltan Kodaly’s “Intermezzo.” The main course is Mozart’s “Divertimento in E flat major, K. 563,” for string trio – and it’s one of the greatest string trios ever composed. Shake Down
Carmel-by – the-Sea and New Orleans could hardly have less in common, but on Feb. 8, with Mardi Gras in full swing, they’ll both share one more thing besides delicious, French-inspired cuisine: sounds that have been described as “musical gumbo.” Swinging through the Sunset Center are the Dirty Dozen Brass Band – whose sounds mix bebop, jazz, funk, rhythm and blues and soul – who have produced 12 studio albums and toured with acts across the spectrum, from Modest Mouse to Widespread Panic. Also in the musical mix this evening are Nathan and the Zydeco Cha-Chas, a band formed in 1985 comprised of members of a South Louisiana family keeping the music of their Creole heritage alive. It’s the Mardi Gras Mambo, a night to put on your dancing shoes and shake things up like the Bohemians of Carmel a century ago, such that they ever existed. You can pretend either way. [DS]

Bookish Valentine’s
The No. 1 New York Times bestselling author Tessa Bailey talks about her new “hot sports romance duology with a rom-com.” It’s about a bad-boy professional athlete who falls for his biggest fan, a story captured in her new book, Fangirl Down. Wells Whitaker was once golf’s hottest rising star, but lately, all he has to show for his “promising” career is a killer hangover, a collection of broken clubs and one remaining supporter. Josephine Doyle believed in the gorgeous, grumpy golfer, even when he didn’t believe in himself. Kosher Feast
A longstanding kosher deli tradition is back in Monterey County, with a slight twist. Instead of stopping to pick up a grab-and-go sandwich, Temple Beth El is now selling deli packs, inviting customers to build their own sandwiches – a choice of corned beef or pastrami on rye with mustard, and pickles, salad and half a chocolate cake on the side. Each pack feeds four, offering a taste of the East Coast – and serving as a fundraiser for the Salinas synagogue. [CJ]

Sing Out
Bring your best skills as a singer, musician, stand-up comedian, storyteller, poet, magician… anything you’ve got is welcome at this new open mic night. Performers of all stripes (and audience members too) are invited to kick off a new, recurring event at The Creperie Cafe – open mics will take place the second Friday of each month. This month is just the first installation, so it’s too soon to know what vibe it will take on. Sweet Ride
Valentine’s Day is all about heartfelt connections with the ones we love, and what nicer way to celebrate than with a heart-healthy bike ride? Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula and Kids Eat Right are presenting a Valentine Ride at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, open to people of all ages and skill levels. This is a chance for families or anyone else to come ride bikes for free on the world-famous race track. The event includes a “blender bike” to make your own smoothies, plus snacks and prizes. Everyone must wear a helmet, no exceptions. Bikes only. Make it a date with someone special and bring a bicycle built for two. Sound of Poetry
Poetry is best experienced when heard read aloud, and the Monterey Bay Poetry Consortium hosts another reading event in its monthly series. This time the evening of poetry features poets Nikia Chaney and Ekua Omosupe. Chaney is the author of two full-length books of poetry, us mouth (2018) and to stir & (2022) – plus a memoir, Ladybug, and a book of science fiction, Three, Walking, and more. Omosupe is a professor of English at Cabrillo College and her first book of poetry, Legacy, was published by Talking Circle Press in Santa Cruz. [AP]

Fantasy Maps
Just when you thought the whole world was already mapped, you are invited to join in the “World Mapmaking” workshop at P.G. Public Library. The library is going big, encouraging participants to create fantasy maps (and, if they wish, come up with their own tales). The event is for students in grades 6-12. All supplies, as well as snacks and drinks, are provided. Remember, that’s exactly how The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings started – with a good fantasy map. For the Love of It
It takes place on Wednesday, Feb. 14. You know what day that is. Organizers are calling it “Lover’s Lunch.” The musical course features love songs and Bon Ton L’Roy’s Lighthouse Smokehouse is whipping up a special menu. But these same organizers say that “all are welcome.” In other words, no need for a special someone to attend. After all, it’s hard to keep singles or groups of non-romantic friends away when the Dave Holodiloff Duo is performing. That’s right, Juneau Rowe on piano and Dave himself – he’s well known; no need to mention his last name, really – on mandolin, playing favorites in a warm, cozy dining room. When music plays at Bon Ton L’Roy’s, all the world’s a lover. [DF]
