Kudos to the Monterey County Probation Department. Guess who’s got their first mural onsite? Artist Fabian Debora – with the help of youth incarcerated in the facility – created a mural at Juvenile Hall in Salinas. A May 30 ceremony was small but touching, with each young man saying a few words about what this creative experience meant to him. “Butterflies mean freedom,” said one. The mural is an addition to an already impressive little garden where roses and chickens share a sunny yard. Debora is the founder of Homeboy Art Academy in Los Angeles. Through art, he promotes understanding of their roots among justice-impacted youth. “The first thing they took from the Native people was art,” he said at the ceremony on Friday, May 30.
