Big Sur Fashion Show at the Barnyard Shopping Village

The Big Sur Fashion Show is celebrating its 10th year with a theme of “Ashes to Art.” With the purpose of displaying the creative minds of amateur local artists, the Big Sur Fashion Show is not what you’d expect. Pieces designed entirely in anything but fabric inspired by the theme are shown off in two-minute acts on the runway. That’s right, acts, not just a catwalk. This event showcases not only fashion and performers, but the artists and stylists as well. The event is made to happen on just ticket sales, sponsorships and more than 200 volunteers. The spirit of Big Sur shows off its creative mind and vision in the form of a runway walk.

Gospel Heritage Month at Golden State Theatre

Monterey County is known for churning out many a musician. There are a plethora of singer-songwriters, mariachi groups, jam bands and composers. But gospel music and gospel choirs also have a deeply rooted history in the area. Made up by local lovers and singers of the genre and led by Seaside’s own John Nash Jr., the only religious requirement for this choir is to believe in the power of music to bring people together. This perspective has allowed them to make stops in a variety of local churches and make connections across personal religious beliefs, race and age both in their choir and in their audiences. Fittingly, they celebrate the month dedicated to their musical roots at this uplifting concert which features their widely expansive repertoire.

Greenfield Harvest Festival at Greenfield Arts Center

If you want to talk about arts and culture in Monterey County, you cannot forget about South County. This festival, which in large part is thanks to a partnership between the Greenfield Arts Center and First Night Monterey, showcases the sincere efforts of dance, art, youth and music groups to make sure that every child has access to the arts. This concert features traditional Aztec dances, banda performances, Chinese lion dancing, folklórico, plus performances from local musicians and music groups like Kiki Wow and Fields of Eden, as well as Sensory Trïbe. And that’s just the lineup so far. Apart from the stage entertainment, there are also food and arts and crafts vendors who stay posted for the duration of the festival.

Veterans Exhibit of Multicultural Histories of Fort Ord at the CSUMB Salinas Center for Arts and Culture

One of the biggest factors that has shaped Monterey County has been the military presence and the mix of races and cultures that came with it. Much of that is seen in the everyday, with schools like the Naval Postgraduate School and Defense Language Institute continuing operation and drawing in students from around the world. The other part of this history, however, is still entrenched in Fort Ord, where the county’s own CSU Monterey Bay is currently located. CSUMB’s arts and cultural center, located in Salinas, honors that multicultural and military history in this exhibit, which illustrates the lives of veterans and the stories and traditions they brought with them when stationed in Fort Ord.

Ocean Trilogy, East West and When You Were Gone at SpectorDance

Though a far cry from the metropolitan centers of San Francisco or New York, Marina’s own SpectorDance can pull in some big names from both national and international stages to perform in their dance studio/venue. But what makes SpectorDance a local performative art force is their ability to communicate local issues like gang violence, warming ocean temperatures and others—without words. They also draw from local writers like John Steinbeck and Robinson Jeffers, making their stage and their choreography somewhat of a common ground for the surrounding community. This performance features founder Fran Atkin Spector’s well-known works Ocean Trilogy and East West. It also debuts a new work, When You Were Gone, about military families.
