In 2024, Emile Norman’s four “Casa Munras panels” were removed from storage after spending 40 years in darkness. Since then, the Monterey History and Art Association has developed a cabinet and lighting design for displaying the panel in the Monterey History and Art Museum at Stanton Center. The mixed media pieces include materials such as ceramic, fiber, glass, wood, silk, metal, bone and more. The panels commemorate such important events in local history as the discovery of Monterey Bay by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542 and the founding of the Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo. Norman was a Big Sur artist who died in 2009. The display was installed and the lights turned on for the first time on Feb. 3, and is now viewable for visitors. The display is permanent.
