• Tickets for the Carmel Bach Festival – themed Bach, Bohemia and Beyond – went on sale this month. What’s planned for this season? • What do college students do for spring break these days? The 50-voice choral group at the Department of Music at Duke University tours and sings for audiences. They do it 7pm Thursday at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Carmel, to the songs of Poulenc, Paulus and Clausen and new work by California composers Eric Whitacre, Frank La Rocca and Kirke Mechem. 624-3883 x14.

• You probably haven’t heard a concert quite like it. Six area churches converge at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Salinas for a handbell workshop 9am-4:30pm, in preparation for a concert at 5:30pm on Saturday of 200 handbell ringers. 596-5747.

• Alvarado Gallery at Monterey Conference Center holds an exhibition called Sense of Place – Monterey Peninsula, comprising oil paintings by Carol Gray and mixed media by Janice Davis, opening 5:30-7pm Friday. 242-8743.

• Julianne Moore won a Best Actress Oscar for her leading role in the film Still Alice, playing a middle-age woman struck with Alzheimer’s. This Saturday (7:30pm) and Sunday (2:30pm), Western Stage director/choreographer Anne Marie Hunter presents I’m Still Here, a piece combining music, movement and family photos of her own experience with the dreaded disease. • Back on Feb. 7, high school kids from Santa Catalina, Gonzales High, Millennium Charter School, Pacific Grove High School and York School competed in the 6th annual Monterey County Poetry Out Loud regionals competition at Millennium’s Black Box. They recited poems and were scored by a panel of judges including Vicki Weaver, Diana Garcia and myself. The Monterey County winner, Sharmaine Sun of Santa Catalina, is competing on the statewide level at the capitol in Sacramento March 15 and 16. I’ll keep you posted on how the dynamo does there.
