ents photography exhibit opens at the Center for Photographic Art 4-7pm Saturday, July 30

  • Artist and photographer Elizabeth Murray has created an art show that blooms from her love of local flora. Kindred Spirits – In Celebration of Trees comprises paintings (and some photos) of local trees, mostly Monterey pines and coast live oaks and trees in her garden. It’s opening 3-5pm Saturday, July 30, at Unitarian Universalist Church in Carmel in a salon style that encourages the communal exchange of ideas and info. 624-7404, www.ElizabethMurray.com.
  • You probably haven’t seen a photography show around these parts quite like Robin Lasser and Adrienne Pao’s Dress Tents. They start with models, put them in a landscape setting, then have them wear clothing that balloons into tents beneath them, like some whimsical installation mocking a fashion shoot. It’s a trip. “Dress Tents are a fusion of architecture, the body, and the land” reads their press release, with references to “the refugee situation, border crossing issues, migrations and climate shifts.” Lasser or Pao can help guide your gaze at the opening reception 4-7pm Saturday, July 30 at the Center for Photographic Art. www.photography.org.
  • The Harrison Memorial Library in Carmel is accepting submissions by Monterey County students 13-18 for their 5th Annual Teen Photo Contest, revolving around the theme of Carmel’s 100th birthday and historic images of the city. One original photo can be dropped off at the library as unmatted 8x10s or emailed as a jpeg or tiff (900x720 pixels or larger) to hml.reference@gmail.com before Sept. 21. All photos will be displayed at the main library; winners will be announced in October. 624-4629, www.hm-lib.org.
  • Plagiarism. Scott Baio. Duck Dynasty. Mock trial. Public betrayal. Queen. Scare-mongering. Angry crowds. Russian espionage. Yelling. House of CardsVeep andScandal are really going to have to dig deep to top that show. In more progressive (if not belated) entertainment news, Disney, created its first Latina princess, Elena of Avalor, for the Disney Channel this month.
  • In previous years, the Carmel International Film Festival has commissioned artists like George RodrigueMr. Brainwash (who played a grand joke on everyone) and David Ligare to create their signature poster. This year’s festival, coming Oct. 19-23, is illustrated by a poster painted by Mexican-born artistGustavo Ramos Rivera, who creates colorful paintings of controlled messiness and geometric intrigue. www.carmelfilmfest.com.
