- I’ve gone to Pacific Grove’s Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary three times over the years, but have not witnessed the great proliferation of them suggested in the branding campaign of “Butterfly Town, U.S.A.” But the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History has compiled data in itsPGMNH Monarch Monitoring Project that states that 24,123 of the butterflies were counted in Pacific Grove in the 2014-15 overwintering season. On Nov. 10 of this year, they counted 740. The museum devotes Science Saturday, 10am-3pm Nov. 24, to the western monarch, with all kinds of activities fluttering throughout the building. pgmuseum.org.
- British-born, Pacific Grove-based historic re-enactor Howard F. Burnham offers a centennial commemoration of the end of World War I in his portrayal of Kaiser Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor and King of Prussia (and FYI, a disaster as a head of state). Burnham invites us to a pivotal moment in his life in which he ruminates on his royal British relatives, the Great War,Churchill and Woodrow Wilson, the Lusitania and more. It’s a tale of war and peace, theatrically told at 5:30pm on Saturday, Nov. 24, at the Little House in Pacific Grove’s Jewell Park. howard_burnham@aol.com, howardburnham.com.

- Peter Hiller, curator of the Jo Mora Trust Collection, has loaned illustrations, comic strips, drawing, paintings, sculpture, photography, maps and books to the Cartoon Art Museum for an exhibition of the iconic Western (including Monterey County) transplant born in Uruguay and nick-named the “Renaissance Man of the West.” The Life and Times of Jo Mora runs through April 28, 2019, at the San Francisco museum. cartoonart.org.
- Do you tuba? How about euphonium? If you play either, the 4th Annual Tuba Christmas is your moment to step out of the shadow of the sousaphones, trumpets and trombones. More than 50 brass players are expected to convene at 1pm Sunday, Dec. 9, at the Monterey Conference Center, for a concert of Christmas music. You can register right up until game day at tcmonterey.wixsite.com/tcmonterey. And here is a bit of trivia for you: “tuba” is Latin for horn.
