- Membership in the Monterey County Theatre Alliance runs Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. So right about now is a very opportune time to consider it. Benefits include a two-fer card for show tickets, invites to MCTA gatherings (they have pretty good spreads), and the monthly newsletter that tells you almost everything you need to know about upcoming productions. One of MCTA’s special events arrives Jan. 22, with a special reception and Sunday matinee performance at Carl Cherry Center of A Life in the Theater, written by the one and only David Mamet. (The play has a limited run, from Jan. 20-29.) 372-0895, www.TheatreMonterey.org.
- If Remo D.’s Manor of Mayhem didn’t exist, we would have to invent it. Local writer/actor Shane M. Dallmann founded the public access show 14 years ago to share the best of the rest of weird cult genre films from all over the world. Dallmann hosted The Manor as hook-handed Remo D., along with producer Gregg Galdo (Kato the Black Hornet) and director Dave Deacon (demented scientist Dr. Montag). They’ve had on guests by the likes of LJ Brewer, Beverly Van Pelt, Eleanor Wylde and Rama P. Jama, taped in Paper Wing Theatre, AMP studios and Spas by the Bay in Seaside. Alas, all good and weird things must come to an end, and The Manor has taped its final show with editor and director of photography Cecelia Caro (who’s played Zelnak the Plutonian and the Spa Genie), Allyson Bojorques (the seductive Carlotta Nightshade), Jeannie Bryant Parker (stern librarian Ms. Atoz) andBrittney Stane (the demonic mermaid Firewater, and snake-goddess Hoichi-Maru). The last episode, full of guest appearances and messages to the faithful, visits airwaves 10pm Friday, Dec. 30, and 5am and 10pm Saturday, Dec. 31, on Comcast channel 24 or streaming at www.ampmedia.org. 384-6057.
- Monterey County Free Libraries has become a member of BookBrowse.com, a website as devoted to books as that guy with the glasses in the “Time Enough At Last” episode of The Twilight Zone. It gathers recommendations and reviews, sorts books by genre, time period, awards and themes, furnishes readers with early reviews for the top 80-plus books published each month, posts articles that put books in context, and throws in quizzes, polls, author interviews and news. “It’s [like] having your own personal librarian,” says MCFL Director Jayanti Addleman.
