  • The nine-week-long NEA/National Steinbeck Center Big Read came to an end last week, Oct. 18. Steinbeck Center’s marketing coordinator, Eric Mora, who had a big hand in the events, reports (from Marseille, France) this look back: “Throughout our Big Read campaign we saw members of our community – students, teachers, artists, actors, poets, activists and residents – wrestle with Claudia Rankine’s words and ideas. To some, the NEA Big Read was an introduction to new concepts and a new awareness to the lived experience of people of color. To others, it was an affirmation that they are not alone in facing microaggressions. To all, it was reminder that interactions between people are rarely black and white and that we all have much to learn in order to understand one another.” steinbeck.org.

  • The city of Seaside is getting into the Halloween spirit by hosting the annual (and free) Halloween Bonanza at Oldemeyer Center 6-9pm Tuesday, Oct. 31, with a haunted house, costume contest, candy bags and glow sticks for the first 500 youths. To borrow a segment from Bill Maher, here is a New Rule: If you know little kids are going to be present, it’s not the right venue to break out the It killer clown mask with butcher knife. That would be personality disorder-ish, somewhere on the lack-of-empathy scale. 899-6803.
