- If you’re reading this, you’re not an unrepentant comic geek because you would be in San Diego Wednesday through Sunday for the Comic-Con International. - The Pacific Grove Art Center is showing and raffling off 180 tiny works of original art, to support the beleaguered center. Tickets are $5 apiece, or 10 for $10, and are on sale through Aug. 25 when the drawing happens. 375-2208.
- Artist, environmentalist and activist Paola Berthoin gives an illustrated talk 6-7pm Thursday, July 21, at Monterey Museum of Art-Pacific, about the two years she spent painting the San Clemente Dam and Chinese Dam removal and the Carmel River reroute project. $10. 624-9467, www.Passion4Place.net.
- If you thought there were only two producers of local theater using the newly reopened Outdoor Forest Theater, the young folks of Paraphrase Productions would like to turn your attention to their production of The Addams Family, running 7:30pm Thursday-Sunday, July 21-24, $15-$20. 601-9984, www.ParaphraseProductions.com.
- At 4m Saturday, July 23, the Monterey Peace and Justice Center in Seaside screens the 1989 documentary that elevated the format: Michael Moore’s Roger & Me, about General Motors and job abandonment of Moore’s hometown of Flint, Michigan – the same Flint, Michigan, that had its water supply rerouted through lead-contaminated pipes by its government. It’s a devastating story about the insatiable greed of the rich, and poor people’s struggle to just get by with some dignity, told with bitter and biting humor. - Local author Robin Gregory’s book The Improbably Wonders of Moojie Littleman has won Gold for Best cover Design in the 18th annual Foreword Reviews’ INDIEFAB Book of the Year Awards for independent publishers, university presses and self-published authors. Nice showing.
- Monterey County Film Commission board of directors has elected Alán Vasquez president. Also elected were Troy Kingshaven, vice president; Kathy Eckerson, secretary; Garland Thompson, treasurer; and Jeff Clark, chairperson.
