• Linda Zupcic will talk about her block printing technique 2pm Thursday at Pacific Grove Art Center. But she goes a step further – she’ll demonstrate it, too. 375-2208.
• 11am-5pm, the Lighthouse District of New Monterey is putting on something called Jazzy Day in the Park, a district-wide sale along Lighthouse Avenue and art in the park at Scholze Park Center. Later, at 8pm, they show Hitchcock’s The Birds in that same park. 655-8070. Or maybe later you might want to check out Jet.
• Jet is a band that some of you may remember. They lead Monterey’s new wave music scene back in the mid to late 1970s, were signed to Michael Nesmith’s Pacific Arts label, dropped one well-received album to the sound of crickets, and disbanded. They’re back, with Zappa cover band Zappa Project, playing American Burger in New Monterey 7-9pm Saturday. 373-7573.
• There’s a live stone sculpting demonstration by famed Zimbabwean sculptor Agnes Nyanhongo in Carmel’s Devendorf Park 11am-3pm on Sunday. If you cross the street to Gallery Sur, her and her family’s work is shown alongside that of Rizimu Chiwawa and Dominic Benhura. 626-2615.
• Seaside City Hall’s Avery Gallery has a new group exhibit, Milestones in Learning, which honors three anniversaries of Seaside institutions: the 85 years of the Seaside Library, 50+ years of Seaside High School, and 20+ years of CSU Monterey Bay. The show’s reception isn’t until September, but the work is already on view 8am-5pm Monday-Friday, starting this Monday. 899-6811.
• The Monterey County Branch NAACP presents a tribute to civil rights activist Julian Bond 7pm Monday, Aug. 31, at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. An author, Harvard professor and ally of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Bond worked in the Student Non-Violence Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Georgia’s House of Representatives and State Senate, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the NAACP. 394-3727.
• Hey, guess who’s getting the band back together? The city of Monterey. They’re looking for musicians with their own instruments, can read music and can commit to rehearsals and performances. Call 646-3866 or 649-1591 to try out for this Monterey Community Band. Maybe they can come up with a livelier name? Like… Black Heart or Demon Screamers… I’m just assuming this will be a headbanger type band?
