- A few issues back we ran a story about the magnificent Jo Mora murals at the then-soon-to-be-opened Trotter Galleries in downtown Pacific Grove. Well, the gallery was soft opened for a while, but is now ready for the grand opening, 5-6:30pm Thursday, Oct. 13. 649-3246, www.TrotterGalleries.com.
- We all love film. From the multiplex to Netflix, I-MAX to biopics. Now and then, you should check out a cache of experimental film to stay in touch with the outer edges of the medium. Experiments in Film – hosted by Silvia Turchin of CSU Monterey Bay’s Cinematic Arts Department and presented by folks from the Exploratorium Cinema Arts Program – presents a free look at films that “play with perception, abstract storytelling and heightened aesthetics,” followed by a brief history of cinema and discussion. It happens 6:30-8pm Thursday, Oct. 13, at CSUMB’s Cinematic Arts Studio. sturchin@csumb.edu.
- From 4-10pm Friday, Oct. 14, Sand City sculptor Karl Schaefer celebrates the opening of the new gallery Gallery Ilad in Sand City with a show of the works of another sculptor. That sculptor would be Pacific Grove’s Peter Partch, and the show is Night of the Limuloids, which includes 13 paper collages and three Partch sculptures. After sundown they promise “dada happenings.” 652-9049, www.KarlSchaeferSculptor.com.
- Crimespree Magazine called Vancouver crime novelist Dietrich Kalteis’s second novel The Deadbeat Club “gritty and raw.” JoAnn Smith Ainsworth, author of Matilda’s Song, says, “Growing up with paternal grandparents born in the 1890s made creating historical novels a logical choice.” Patrick Whitehurst has written fiction and nonfiction, for newspapers, and is currently a member of the Central Coast Writers group. All three authors appear at Old Capitol Books 3-5pm Sunday, Oct. 16, to talk about their work. 333-0383, www.OldCapitolBooks.com.
- The Carmel Woman’s Club is not what you might at first think. Unless you thought it was the second-oldest organization in Carmel, which propagates and support the arts and the free exchange of ideas, and provides scholarships and philanthropy. Then it’s exactly what you thought. This time around they bring forth author Lisa Crawford Watson to talk about “Legendary Locals of Carmel-by-the-Sea,” a book of 192 profiles of people influential in the character of the town. Her talk is accompanied by a photo slideshow by photographer Phillip M. Geiger. It’s 2-4pm Monday, Oct. 17. Tea is served afterward. 624-2866.
The Moss Landing Marine Laboratories 50th anniversary quilt depicts research sites like Elkhorn Slough, the Monterey Canyon, Monterey Bay's kelp forests, and Antarctica, in more than 3,300 pieces.
