- Gallerist and all-around gentleman Steve Hauk sent a tip that on Nov. 28, SteinbeckNow.com reported California artist Gregory Kondos had given Pacific Grove Public Library his painting “House of Steinbeck,” which he painted from photos of the P.G. cottage the author often resided in. “I painted it in memory of Nancy [Hauk],” Kondos told SteinbeckNow.com.
- Last week I wrote about a special 15th-anniversary screening of the Studio Ghibli animated film Spirited Away, finishing up its limited run at Century Cinemas and Northridge Cinemas 7pm Thursday, Dec. 8. It’s a charming and awesome film for kids 6 or 7 and older. Now, Fathom Events and GKIDS are bringing back the legendary studio’s flagship film for tweens and older, Princess Mononoke, for a 20th-anniversary run in the same two theaters Jan. 5 and 9. - Monterey Peninsula College Library previews and opens the exhibit The Frances Adler Elkins Collection 4-6pm on Friday, Dec. 9. For the occasion, San Francisco journalistScott Powell will talk about the legacy of the California interior design pioneer, who lived and worked on the Monterey Peninsula from 1948 to 1953. Adler Elkins is credited with starting trends that caught the fancy of socialites, like mixing contemporary and traditional styles, and influenced other interior designers at the time. 646-3088, aconverse@mpc.edu.
- In just its second year here, Tuba Christmas Monterey has filled up all available seats for its 1pm Sunday, Dec. 11, free performance of holiday tunes at Golden State Theatre. - The Germanacos Foundation, which bills itself as being “dedicated to civil engagement,” and Reckonings, a podcast about “how people change their hearts and minds,” team up on a neighborly facilitated activity at Bay Cafe & Cantina that they’re calling “Where I’m Coming From: Post-Election America.” It’s for people who want to understand the other side of the election divide in a spirit of civility. Doors open at 5:30pm, the facilitated activity is 6-7:30pm, with mingling until 8pm, all on Tuesday, Dec. 13. This sounds like a peaceable assembly, but be wary of civility greasing the way to acquiescence.
