- When Melissa Smedley first heard the term “The Lettuce Curtain,” it evoked all kinds of ideas and emotions, which she redirected into an art show at Open Ground Studios calledPerishables. The press statement reads, in part, “In local vernacular, this evidently referred to the unwillingness of tourists to venture out from the Peninsula to the city of Salinas.” I would amend that: It’s locals who won’t cross the so-called curtain. But the main ideas she sets her art to include politics, immigration, economics, water and climate – that’s all. It opens 5:30-7:30pm Thursday, Nov. 2. 241-6919.
- Humans spend a lot of time and energy thinking about it, pursuing it, doing it, overindulging it, avoiding it. It consumes much of our youth, and then in old age most of us will stop. We’re talking about work, of course. The Mezzanine Gallery at the Monterey Regional Airport (such a fun, small and humane travel hub) is hosting an art show about this subject that I think deserves more attention. Their Monterey County Works: People & Jobs Power Our Communities exhibition will focus on various types of work that locals have done here. It opens 5-7pm Friday, Nov. 3. 648-7000.
- The Center for Photographic Art opens its 2017 International Juried Exhibition 4-5pm Saturday, Nov. 4, in Sunset Center’s Carpenter Hall, followed by a reception and awards 5-7pm in the CPA Gallery. This year’s juror is Philip Brookman, consulting curator in the Department of Photographs at the National Gallery in D.C. That is one serious credential. photography.org.
- The Carmel Art Association turns the spotlight to painter Belinda Vidor’s solo exhibition Songs from the Heart, opening 5-7pm Saturday, Nov. 4, with an artist meet-and-greet 1pm the next day, Nov. 5. In addition to her abstract-expressionist paintings, maybe another thing she’ll indulge in talking about is her legendary Hollywood film director father, King Vidor. 624-6176, carmelart.org.
- Hartnell College faculty member Dr. Hortencia Jimenez has published a book titled Challenging Inequalities: Readings in Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration, with contributions from local artists and scholars, and intended as a resource for students to navigate these complex things.
- Took my family to Maya Cinemas in Salinas to watch My Little Pony: The Movie (nice title guys, hope you didn’t work too hard on it :) and the new seats… holy… you haven’t… plush leather, wide, new car smell, they recline with the push of a button, a footrest lifts up by hydraulics. They’re awesome. I can’t wait to see a movie there again. Any movie.
