- Youth Music Monterey conductor and music director Farkhad Khudyev just came back from Frankfurt, Germany, where he won third place out of 300 conductors from 58 countries in the 8th International Sir Georg Solti Conducting Competition, one of the biggest such competitions in the world. He reports that in the finals he conducted a concert with the prestigious Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Bravo! www.youthmusicmonterey.org.
- Monterey Museum of Art-Pacific is spinning a Family Day, subtitled “Figure It Out,” from their current exhibition Edward Weston: Portrait of the Young Man as an Artist. - Black Lives Matter-Seaside is showing Ava Duvernay’s Oscar-nominated documentary 13th at Monterey Peace and Justice Center this Saturday, Feb. 18, starting at 11:30am, followed by a panel and discussion. It’s about the 13th Amendment, the one that abolishes slavery, and the loophole written into it that preserves slavery as punishment in the case of prison inmates. nolackms@yahoo.com.
- The annual membership meeting of the Heritage Society of Pacific Grove, 2pm Sunday, Feb. 19, at P.G. Middle School’s Performing Arts Center is open to the public. In the first half they elect new board members, but the second part may interest you. It’s a lecture by historian Sandy Lydon on Japanese American internment called “Paranoia, Prejudice and America’s Concentration Camps – How It Happened and Have We Learned Anything?” Which has much relevance in this new wave of immigrant roundups, government watch lists and sanctioned xenophobia. $5 donations welcome. 372-2898, www.pacificgroveheritage.org.
