Craddock Butterfield Gallery closes its doors with a dual show of work by Charlie Craddock and Lucas Blok, the reception for which is 6-9pm Friday, Feb. 2.

  • Just in time for the Weekly’s Santa Cruz County versus Monterey County issue (see story, p. 22), Monterey Peninsula College Gallery hosts yet another pair of Santa Cruz artists: Janet Fine and Ron Baldwin. The show includes photography, wood sculpture, moving parts and lights. The first reception is 12:30-2pm Thursday, Feb. 1 (1pm artists’ talk), with another following 3-5pm Saturday, Feb. 10. 646-3060.
  • Craddock Butterfield Gallery in Pacific Grove, formerly M42 of Carmel Valley, is closing its doors after a two-year run of showing innovative art stuff. They’re closing with a final show 6-9pm Friday, Feb. 2 (which happens to be First Friday in P.G.) on a dual show by Lucas Blok andCharlie Craddock. 659-1422, charliecraddock.com.
  • You’ve seen comedian Sean Lynch on Amazon’s Comics Watching Comics, on The Walking Dead: A New Frontier, on MTV’s Celebrity Death Match (well, you’ve heard his voice on that claymation wrestling series). You might have caught his act at Carolines on Broadway or the Underground Comedy Lounge. Now you can see the funny man at The Wharf Theater 8pm Tuesday, Feb. 6, in a comedy showcase benefit for the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation, alongside other good-hearted comics Jason Rogers, Scott Smith and host Amy Gonzalez. Tickets are $15 for a night of laughter that goes toward healing children. 238-0777.
  • The 15th annual Steinbeck Young Authors’ Day of Writing, coming March 5, is looking for 100-120 writing coaches to help Monterey County students craft an essay extracting moral lessons from Steinbeck’s short story “The Gift,” from his novel The Red Pony. Which is a narrow and prescriptive way to read literature. But the kids are sweet and the act of mentoring fosters its own lessons. Email programs@steinbeck.org for more.
  • Here is another Steinbeck-centric volunteer opportunity. The historic Steinbeck House in Salinas is seeking volunteers in February to staff the restaurant, cashier, kitchen and gift shop. 424-2735.
  • ARIEL Theatrical has announced that Heather Kirk, its former development director, will be the new executive director. She’s got energy and theater smarts, helped guide the company through the post-fire recovery, and is conscious that kids theater works can adhere to their mission of respect, accountability and integrity. Parents, keep watching. arieltheatrical.org.
