- New stuff at Middlebury Institute of International Studies. From 5:30-7:30pm on Thursday, Sept. 29, the new MIIS Committee on Art in Public Places (CAPP) opens the first exhibit in the new Global Perspective Gallery in the MIIS Samson Center Reading Room with Global Perspectives: The Refugee Crisis. It’s a photo slideshow and talk by MIIS alumna Sumaya Agha that she brings back from her stint with Mercy Corps documenting the Syrian Refugee Crisis. - On Friday, Sept. 30, at 4:30pm, Hartnell College is holding a ribbon cutting of its new, 54,000 square foot, science-oriented STEM Center Building and a sculpture dedication in honor of Kong Yau Lowe and Kwai Ning Lowe. To mark the occasion, there will be guest speakers, building tours, appetizers and refreshments (maybe someone will put on Thomas Dolby’s “She Blinded Me With Science”). I know one 9-year-old who’s going to be especially excited about this development: the new planetarium is twice the size of the old one. 755-6810.
- More promising news comes out of Hartnell College this weekend. This Saturday, Oct. 1, the school’s Student Center hosts the sixth Juntos Podemos, a community dialogue centered around the idea of local young people being the champions of change and prosperity in the Salinas Valley. It runs 10am-1pm, and includes a resource fair, music by Latin Jazz Youth Orchestra, the aforementioned youth speaking their piece, adult speakers Erandi Garcia of Univision 67, psychologist Maria Alejandrina Nava, and MIIS professor William Arrocha, and the Hartnell Folklorico Dance Club. 642-4446, juntospodermosorg@gmail.com.
- Monterey Regional Airport may be small, and doesn’t serve as many cities as bigger airports to the north, but the anxiety level is also so diminutive that it’s a pleasure to be there. This Saturday, Oct. 1, from 11am-3pm, even more so. To celebrate its 75th year, they’re throwing a community shindig at the Monterey Jet Center where families can check out new and vintage planes and rescue vehicles, see displays by NOAA and the Coast Guard, eat from food trucks and drink beer and wine, set kids loose on arts and crafts and a bounce house, and buy tickets to take a ride on a plane.
