- The Monterey Museum of Art is all about women this year, putting them front and center for a host of exhibitions. The latest opens 6:30-7:30pm Thursday, Sept. 20 (with paid admission for non-members). It features Salon Jane, a group of women photographers – Martha Casanave, Susan Hyde Greene, Jane Olin, Anna Rheim, Robin V. Robinson and Robin Ward – who came together in 2014 to support each other. Their work addresses as multitude of issues from a multitude of approaches. - Before the 28th annual Monterey County Artists Open Studios Tour launches, a round-up exhibition of one piece from each participating artist warms up the proceedings. - First there was Festa Italia, then the Turkish Festival, then the Greek Festival, now make way for the Chinese Cultural Festival. It’s at Custom House Plaza 10am-5pm Sunday, Sept. 23. - As it prepares to launch another NEA Big Read campaign (this one behind Tobias Wolff’s 1989 memoir This Boy’s Life), the National Steinbeck Center first puts on a film festival Mondays at Maya Cinemas, as it did last year when the book was Claudia Rankine’s Citizen. This film series, like Wolff’s book, revolves around adolescent and teen boys. It started Sept. 17 with an adaptation of Steinbeck’s The Red Pony, and runs to Oct. 22. Next up is 2016’s The Bad Kids, playing 6pm Monday, Sept. 24. After that, look for The 400 Blows by Francois Truffaut, 2017’s The Lavender Scare, 2006’s Take My Eyes, ending with 1993’s This Boy’s Life, the film adaptation of the book starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Barkin and Robert De Niro. 775-4721, steinbeck.org.
