- I went to a part of the Watsonville Film Festival. The part where they showed the Oscar-nominated animated, wordless, musical Brazilian film Boy and the World, about urban development, globalization, collectivism, labor and a boy who navigates all this to find his family again. And it was a delight. Seek it out and watch it with an open mind (it should be fine for kids) for a reminder of what the imagination applied to film can do.
- Here are some conspicuous signs of the fall season. The Weekly published the Fall Arts Preview a couple weeks back (the Fall Arts Calendar is viewable online). It actually rained a bit. And the Monterey Museum of Art is launching its annual Miniatures fundraiser exhibition. It’s comprised of hundreds of small, donated, original artworks by artist members of the museum, arranged like a wall-mounted domino chain in the Pacific Street branch. Raffle tickets are $5 apiece, $30 for seven (more for the special larger works), with winners posted on www.MontereyArt.org on Jan. 19, 2017. In the meantime, the opening reception is 5:30-7:30pm Friday, Oct. 7. 372-5477.
- The first-ever Monterey Peninsula Antique Postcard & Ephemera Show goes down 10am-5pm Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Hilton Garden Inn Monterey. It’s a flurry of “postcards, maps, photos, books, calendars, menus, labels, stereo-views, stamps, posters, advertising and more,” for history buffs, nostalgia traffickers, graphic design nerds and collectors. And you gotta admire that they’re touting the word “ephemera.” 375-6546.
- The Center for Ocean Solutions assembles a panel of artists at Moss Landing Marine Labs for “Converging Currents: Where Art and Science Meet,” 5-8:30pm Saturday, Oct. 8. It’s a discussion about how art can illustrate complex scientific processes and phenomena, via science-centric artists including Daniel McCormick, Mary O’Brien, Marina’s own Enid Baxter Ryce (whom I am merrily married to), Adrien Segal from Oakland and Andrea Dingedein of Pacific Grove. The evening concludes with a reception in a pop-up gallery of work from students, faculty and other science-inspired artists. Or it could also end with a stroll on the beach, depending on your disposition. Register at www.centerforoceansolutions.org.
- The Harden Foundation has awarded ARIEL Theatrical $25,000 in matching grants, which would double any incoming donations for the next year. If you were thinking about donating to the children’s theater company, the iron is now officially hot. 775-0976, www.ArielTheatrical.org.
