- The Watsonville Film Festival is premiering Queens of Syria, a documentary about 50 exiled Muslim women who perform Euripides’ The Trojan Women, directed byYasmin Fedda, as part of a nationwide campaign called Seventh Art Stand to counteract racism and Islamophobia. - The Arts Council for Monterey County brokered a deal that filled previously vacant storefront space inside the American Tin Cannery with working artists studios dubbed ArtWorks @Pacific Grove. Now that collective of 20 artists offers you more reason than just eating at First Awakenings or riding the county’s longest escalator (that’s a thing) to visit. They’re putting on a Third Friday Art Walk 6-8pm May 19, loaded with live music, light refreshments, local art and echoey ambience. 622-9060 x104.
- The Community FUNd Day at Del Monte Manor in Seaside offers up free food and entertainment to inspire donations to build a new playground. It’s 11am-3pm Saturday, May 20.
- Nonprofit Yellow Brick Road has awarded AMP Media with a $2,000 grant for its AMPlify Hope program. That’s a six-month project in which AMP (Access Monterey Peninsula) trains staff and clients of nonprofit Hope Services of Monterey County to make videos about people with developmental disabilities for broadcast on AMP (channels 24, 99 or 27). This is a positive feedback loop.
- The musical animated movie Sing is an amazing piece of work in the vein of talent shows like America’s Got Talent and The Voice, dense with the dreams and aspirations of untapped artists. The Monterey County Fair is harnessing that kind of energy with its own talent contest for dancers, singers, martial artists, gymnasts and other performers.
