ARTIFACTS – Fire in the Hamptons sets it off at Planet Gemini on Friday.

• World Rivers Day was Sept. 29. The Carmel River Festival and Feast is Oct. 13. In between, 24 plein air painters from the Bay Area to Monterey County will paint from the natural surroundings of the Carmel River Watershed for the coming festival. The works are judged by painters Jan Wagstaff, Jeff Daniel Smith and Erin Gafill, and 30 percent of proceeds from their sale will benefit the Carmel River Steelhead Association and the Carmel River Watershed Conservancy. 238-1683 for more.

• Photographs can be so informative… and elusive. They use only sight to speak for the other senses. David Dilworth uses his sense of sight, though, blended with a sense of wonder, in his photographs of the Monterey Coast, which he shows at an opening of an art show 6-8pm Friday at Unitarian Universalist Church (490 Aguajito Road, Carmel). 624-7404, InspiringLandscapes.com.

• Freeway Productions, the conjoined moniker for busy local couple Maya Freedman and Brian Conway, brings back electro-power pop outfit Fire in the Hamptons to Planet Gemini (2110 N. Fremont St., Monterey, $10, 21+) Saturday at 9:30pm for a Kickstarter Benefit party. Special guests include The Silhouette Era and DJ Action Jackson.

• A couple of weekends ago the Friends of the Marina Library held their seasonal book sale at the Marina Library, filled with prizes like the anthology Grooving the Symbol, with counterculture pieces by Richard Wright, Tom Wolfe and Flannery O’Connor. The Friends also host a movie night, showing Robot and Frank, Moonrise Kingdom and such. Now the Friends are putting on another installment of a new series called Wonderful World of Music 1-3pm Saturday, this one starring The Fireside Collective jazz ensemble. It’s free, though donations are appreciated, at 190 Seaside Circle.

• Maybe you read here last week about the National Steinbeck Center retracing the Route 66 journey of the Joad family in John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath in commemoration of the 75th year of the book. They’ll be joined by playwright Octavio Solis, historian and artist Patricia Wakida and filmmaker and producer P.J. Palmer. They depart Oklahoma Oct. 4 and make their way through Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, then California, ending on Oct. 14. They’ll blog about it and the people they meet at GrapesOfWrath75.org. Tune in.
