The first is My Neighbor Totoro, which plays 12:55pm on Sunday (dubbed) and 7pm Monday (subtitled) June 25 and 26. It’s preceded by GKids MiniFest, an ongoing festival of award-winning short animated films from the world over. Tix at gkidstickets.com, fathomevents.com or at Century Cinemas.
- The Monterey Jazz Festival has chosen 20 students to comprise the 2017 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra members, and for the summer they’re hitting the road on a whirlwind tour of spots like the Orpheum Film and Performing Arts Center, Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center and Toronto Jazz Festival. In September they’re playing the Monterey Jazz Festival as well as at the Jazz Legends Gala at Spanish Bay honoring Herbie Hancock. Right on. Montereyjazzfestival.org.
- Bradley is the Monterey County Free Libraries branch furthest south, and unfortunately it’s closing until they find a new facility. In the meantime, those patrons will be visited by the Bookmobile 10am-2pm every other Tuesday starting July 18 at the Bradley School; can get materials via the Library-by-Mail program (883-7544); can go to the San Ardo (627-2503) and King City (385-3014) branches; and can use online services 24 hours, including downloadable books. co.monterey.ca.us/library.
- The Steinbeck Center has a poster by book publisher Penguin Classics with the words “Remember,” “Resist” and “Rediscover” emblazoned across the top, and filled with quotes from the U.S. Constitution, George Orwell, Ida B. Wells, Malcolm X, Hannah Arendt, Zitkala-Sa and so on. Here is one from Frederick Douglass: “The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.” In the middle, the torch of the Statue of Liberty. Ah. It’s a protest poster, imploring us to explore our literary and political roots. #RememberResistRediscover.
