- Raoul Peck’s film I Am Not Your Negro is an experimental documentary about James Baldwin and his era of black intellectual, artistic and civil rights struggle. It’s narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, who reads from Baldwin’s unfinished book Remember This House, about three of his friends who were assassinated: Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Medgar Evers. But it’s also about black representation in the movies and the cost of moral corruption. It’s such a unique storytelling method that it may confound conventional viewing and compel talking through it. That’s a good thing. - Avery Gallery hosts a reception for its 2017 Youth Art Competition 7-8:30pm Friday, March 17, featuring photography, crafts, painting and sculptures from young creative minds and hands. The exhibit runs until April 27. 899-6811.
- I just saw Richard Linklater’s movie Boyhood in which the main character ponders the physical world through a camera, so I’m inclined to believe every teen should try photography, for a while at least. The Marina Public Library agrees. They’re offering teens a free five-day photography workshop, led by Tom Gibson and Tiffany Velasquez-Walker, including field trips and a photo exhibition. - Jeff Hoke is a visionary artist and illustrator. His Museum of Lost Wonder (and its accompanying website) is a… wonder… combining architecture, arcane sciences, alchemy, mysticism and gothic atmosphere. Tim Burton would love it. Well, Hoke is back with a new folio of monographs and pop-up model called Dream Palaces, vividly realized illustrations of… dream palaces. Check it out on the website, lostwonder.org.
- Dali17 has announced a new film series. The main attraction is Impressions of Upper Mongolia, a surrealist (bien sur) and fictitious documentary about the search for potent psychedelic mushrooms (of course) in Upper Mongolia. It features Salvador Dali speaking forcefully in French about… stuff. It’s preceded by a bunch of short films, including Dali andLuis Bunel’s Un Chien Andalou (a film school favorite), Dirty Dali – A Private View, Dali on Dali and Neil Hotelling: Salvador Dali on the Monterey Peninsula. On Friday and Saturday, they’re showing another Bunel/Dali collab, 1930’s L’Age D’or at 4:30pm. 372-2608, info@dali17.com.
