- Monterey Peninsula College Art Gallery hosts two receptions for a show by sculptor Peter Hiers, who just got back from China’s International Biennial (I wonder if Ai Wei Wei was there). He speaks 12:30-1pm Thursday, Oct. 12, and comes back for another reception 4-6pm Saturday, Oct. 14.
- The Marina Public Library is like the cool library. I mean, all libraries are cool, but the Marina Library is the one that’s like, “Hey, I’m throwing a party this Saturday. We’re gonna have a band, some refreshments, probably a book sale. You should come.” And then hands you a crude but stylish flyer that says 1-3pm Oct. 14, Community Room, Chicano All Stars, 682-8016.
- Hartnell College knows how to make learning fun, accessible and engaging (exhibit A: the planetarium) and, at events like this Saturday’s science and learning festival, family-friendly. Family STEM & Arts Day unleashes waves of activities swirling around astronomy, athletics, coding, engineering, theater, crafting and building, physics and something called the STEM Arts Lab. Food will be available for purchase, the event is free and wheelchair accessible, with provisions possible for the hearing impaired (755-6970). It begins 12pm Oct. 15.
- CSU Monterey Bay hosts a Community Dialogue titled “Obamacare: Mend it or end it?” 5:30-7pm Monday, Oct. 16, at the University Center Ballroom, with panelists U.S.Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel Valley; Dr. Gary Gray, CEO of Natividad Medical Center; Pete Delgado, president/CEO of Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System; andStephanie Sonnenshine of Central California Alliance for Health. It’s free; RSVP required. The “end it” side would seem to have a much bigger hill to climb and I wish them no luck. csumb.edu.
- The Carmel International Film Festival officially kicks off 5:30pm Wednesday, Oct. 18, with a wine reception and opening dinner at Bernardus Lodge & Spa for $5,000 sponsors and those with $2,500 patron credentials. But Henry Miller Lab plays a joker card on a $10 (suggested donation) buy-in, screening the absolute classic Cold War comedy Dr. Strangelove, directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Peter Sellers, 7pm that same day.
- In related news, word is the Henry Miller Lab experiment at The Barnyard may be coming to a wrap at the end of October as a result of the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge re-opening, allowing traffic to flow to Big Sur’s Henry Miller Memorial Library again, after months of limited access on “Big Sur Island.”
