  • An announcement about ceramacist Ken Takara opening reception at Salinas Valley Art Gallery, 5-8pm Friday, March 3, offers these helpful guideposts to understanding his work: “Art that says ‘I’m tableware.’ Or maybe it’s tableware that says ‘I’m art’… Perhaps because of his Japanese/Okinawan heritage, his ware looks like a contemporary version of the Japanese/Okinawan style. Just as bamboo and pottery are central to the spirit of the Japanese people, they have always imbued Ken’s core.” www.SalinasValleyArtGallery.com.

  • The Carmel Art Association turns 90 this year, so they’re putting on two big exhibitions. One is a rare retrospective of 200 works by more than 50 past members since 1927 in the Beardsley Gallery. They add to that hefty show a companion exhibit of 100 new works by current members artists in the Segal Gallery. It all opens 5-7pm Saturday, March 4. 624-6176, sallycarmelart@gmail.com.

  • For Women’s History Month, the Salinas Public Library has assembled presentations by five local women at the forefront of civic and artistic life in the region. • I read that Nathalie Plotkin, a longtime Herald theater and music critic, passed away in January at age 92. I admired her writing and her empathy, and I’m sure her voice is missed.
