The Salinas Movement Project performed a topical play at last week’s First Friday at CSUMB Salinas Center for Arts and Culture in which the audience was invited to choose a plot direction by live texting their vote.

  • If you watched the 90th Oscars last Sunday, you might have caught a familiar face.Christopher “Boogy” Marcos – graduate of Seaside High School and the film department at CSU Monterey Bay, former Marina-based actor, dancer and choreographer now living in Hollywood, last seen here starring in Western Stage’s production of Lin Manuel-Miranda’s musical In the Heights – could be seen as a backup performer as part of the Greatest Showmanchoir to Keala Settle and her stirring song “This Is Me.” He’s posted up right behind her. Check out the performance online or on his Facebook page.
  • Nikki Nedeff is president of the Monterey Bay Chapter of the California Native Plant Society and teaches plant community ecology at CSU Monterey Bay. She is particularly suited to talk and sell books – at 7pm Thursday, March 8, at Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History – about the subject of California plants and their behavior and adaptations to fire. 236-0905, montereybaycnps@gmail.com.
  • The Carmel Art Association opens its 2018 Spring Catalog exhibition 5-7pm Saturday, March 10. It comprises 100 paintings and sculptures by 52 of their members artists, and comes with a free booklet. 624-6176, carmelart.org.
  • Grigori Rasputin and the Romanov family Russian dynasty continue to fascinate people, especially when we see the sway other so-called “Rasputins” had on power, like Steve Bannon with Trump, or Choi Soon-sil with South Korean President Park Geun-hye. Douglas Smith has published a biography of Rasputin, which Publishers Weekly called “monumental and soul-shaking.” He speaks 7pm Wednesday, March 14, at Carpenter Hall at Sunset Center, for Carmel Public Library, on “Rasputin: Faith, power, and the twilight of the Romanovs.” 624-2811, carmelpubliclibraryfoundation.org.
  • For the fourth year, the Marina Library hosts a free, five-day photography workshop for teens during MPUSD’s spring break (9am-3pm March 26-30). It’ll be taught by professional photographers Tiffany Velasquez-Walker and Matt Borkowski, who will take the select group on field trips to local parks, beaches and Monterey, and teach them DSLR cameras and Adobe photo editing software. The collective work will be displayed at an exhibit at the library, opening April 7. This is an artistic take on spring break – before college redefines it with jello shots, T-shirt cannons and EDM beach concerts. Sign up now. 883-7507.
