  • Outside of its congregation and special ceremonies, many people know Congregation Beth Israel as the spot for the Jewish Food Festival and the Carmel Jewish Film Festival. Well here is another secular reason to visit the Carmel Valley venue: their Three Dynamic Women Speakers series starts 7-8:30pm Thursday, June 28, with Rabbi Leah Novick talking about “The 1970 Women’s Movement and Bella Abzug.” Back in the day, Novick was the chief aide for the political leader. 250-5171, marciagrosen@gmail.com.
  • Artist Gerardo Zambrano’s work has appeared in Never Bored Magazine and Hartnell College’s Western Stage. But his first solo art exhibition is The Trilogies at Wave Street Studios, 27 pieces, including portraits, culled from his recent works, featured in sets of three. Some sets are titled with very current and topical names, like “Game of Thrones,” “NFL Series,” California Roots Festival” and “Faces of DACA.” The opening, 4-7pm Sunday, July 1, will be scored with music by Alex Ramirez and Liquid Abyss, Zambrano will talk about his painting process and some of the specific pieces on display, the event will be live streamed, local coffee and organic tea will be available for purchase, and the cover charge (a rarity for an art opening) is $10. wavestreetstudios.com.
  • A reminder that the deadline for nominations for the 2019 Champions of the Arts is midnight on July 1. The Arts Council for Monterey County says this is an “opportunity to showcase someone that means a lot to our community.” Go to their website to see a list of past champions so you don’t suggest someone who’s already gotten the award (the numbers are adding up) and to then nominate. arts4mc.org/champions.
  • Back when I was doing freelance advertising copywriting, the Communication Arts annual advertising issue was coveted by creatives in the industry eager to see the latest peer-curated cream of the crop. So I get why photographers would be excited when the “largest trade journal of visual communications” releases its CA Photography Annual 59. And locals may recognize one of its peer curators – Jerry Takigawa. The photographer and designer helped judge this year’s CA competition with National Geographic senior photo editor Todd James; designer and EmDash founder Erin Mayes; Goodby, Silverstein & Partners senior print producer/art buyer Noah Dasho; and Brooklyn photographer Sarah Wilmer. The issue is due to hit newsstands in July.
