The cast of Western Stage’s 2x4BASH production of Karen Zacarias’ Just Like Us, one of two edgy and award-winning summer shows, opening this weekend.

  • If news from the federal government has got you down, find some solace in California Gov.Jerry Brown’s (outgoing) administration. In his last state budget, he upped the California Arts Council’s funding by $8.8 million. arts.ca.gov.
  • The convergence of summertime, theater and students (18-29) is back as Western Stage launches its daring 2x4BASH’s 2018 season to produce two shows. The first is Karen ZacariasJust Like Us, a documentary-style play based on Helen Thorpe’s best-selling book, following four Latina girls as they navigate immigration, citizenship, friendship and politics. It’s playing 7:30pm Fridays and Saturdays, July 13, 14, 20, 21 and Aug. 10 and 11. The other play, Annie Baker’s The Flick, won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and 2013 Obie Award for Playwriting, and runs in repertory starting July 27. 755-6816, westernstage.com.
  • I don’t know much about the Big Sur Park School benefit variety show, happening 7:30pm Friday, July 13, at Henry Miller Library, but there’s music and comedy featuring “Big Sur superstars,” a silent auction, curating by Sam and Candice, and $20 tickets benefit the school. henrymiller.org.
  • The Marina Library is hosting another free Block Party Play Date, 10am-11:30am Saturday, July 14. That’s block as in building blocks. Bring the kids. facebook.com/friendsofthemarinalibrary.
  • Stage actor and historical impersonator F. Howard Burnham is at it again, this time paying homage to Paris and Bastille Day in a “Gallic gallimaufry” (his phrase; I had to look it up, too) 3pm Saturday, July 14, at the Little House in Jewell Park. 747-1630, howardburnham.com.
  • The Monterey Bay Derby Dames bouts are about speed, power and style. That’s a powerful lure for young girls who are not all that enamored with, say, ballet. Their next home match is 6-9pm Saturday, July 14, versus the Peninsula Roller Girls, at Water City Sports Center in Marina. $15 for general admission, free for kids 10 and under. 272-2037, montereybayderbydames.org.
  • Gather round and Charles and Patty Kieffer will tell the tale of Juan Bautista de Anza and his fateful, 1,800-mile expedition from Tupac, Arizona, to San Francisco, leading 240 people (and a contingent of livestock) in 1775 to establish European inroads into Native American homeland. It’s part of the Heritage Society’s lecture series, 2pm Sunday, July 15, at Chautauqua Hall. $5 donation requested. 372-2898, pacificgroveheritage.org.
