Addison Frei played nine sets on piano throughout the three days of the Monterey Jazz Festival.

  • The 61st Monterey Jazz Festival has left the building. And probably had to walk a long way to its car due to road construction taking North Fremont street parking out of commission. But inside the gates, it was the expected high degree of musical excellence. Seaside musicians Akili and Ayana Bradley Quintet sounded good at Dizzy’s Den. Jose James ended his main stage set with a breezy rendition of Bill Withers’ “Lovely Day” that defined the moment. I heard that avant-garde duo Knower exploded expectations and blew minds. Lucinda Williams on Sunday, according to my wife and others, not so much. But the ladies of LADAMA got the garden stage crowd off their butts. Wadada Leo Smith was contemplative. The Navy jazz band did a brassy arrangement of The Incredibles theme song. Mwenso & the Shakes got off to a late start, but made up for it with experimental and musical daring. And Addison Frei tickled the ivories on the so-called courtyard stage (aka the “island”) near the food court to the delight of the hungry and the tired. Respect. montereyjazzfestival.org.
  • Kids 7-13 can come to Main Street Art in Northridge Mall 11am-1pm Sunday, Sept. 30, for a free paint day. No reservations are required and participants walk away from the one-hour session with their own work of art. 449-7227, mmartinez@starwoodretail.com.
  • If you learned in school that Christopher Columbus discovered America, then later had to unlearn it as rational people suggested that a person can’t “discover” a land already occupied by millions of people, or that Norse explorer Leif Erikson was the first European to land in North America (500 years before Columbus), then you can probably claim victimhood of one of the many Lies My Teacher Told Me. That’s the title, btw, of a book by James Loewen, who won the 1996 American Book Award for it. He’s got a 2018 edition, and is coming to speak on propaganda, race and racism, and historical monuments at Hartnell College’s Western Stage6pm Wednesday, Oct. 3, in a free talk titled “The most important era in U.S. history you never heard of… and why it’s especially important today.” danielstonebloom@gmail.com.
  • The Harrison Memorial Library sponsors the Annual Teen Photography Contest. The theme is “Friendship.” Interested Monterey County teens 13-18 can drop off a photo at the library or email it as a JPEG or TIF. All photos will be displayed and winners get gift cards to Del Monte Shopping Center. Email photos to lwalling@ci.carmel.ca.us.
