- The first Kite Festival at Carmel Valley Ranch last Saturday was a beauty to behold, not least of which for the venue – a lush, green, vast, bowl-like amphitheater of lawn carved out between putting greens – and the kids and adults running here and there to get their kites airborne. An auspicious festival launch.

- Antoinette Anderson, a CSU Monterey Bay graduate and admissions counselor, is one of the most positive and energetic people you will ever meet. Maybe you’ll get a chance at CSUMB’s World Theater to see her new play, A Race Through Time. It covers African-American history from the West African slave trade all the way up to #BlackLivesMatter, it runs 7pm Thursday and Friday, April 6 and 7, and is a fundraiser for the NAACP CSUMB College Chapter and Black Students United. $5-$7. csumb.edu/worldtheater.
- Artist John Hain served as a peer-counselor and volunteer peer-educator in the Breakthrough Men’s Workshop since 1995, investigating – according to a press release – the “psycho-spiritual nature of personal transformation.” He superimposes words onto illustrations that reinforce their meaning. Like the words “connect” and “respect” plastered across two hands shaking. His show, Be – Change – Become, opens 5:30-7:30pm Friday, April 7, at Open Ground Studios. 241-6919, opengroundstudios.com.
- The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom brings in Dr. Sharat Lin, research fellow with the San Jose Peace and Justice Center, to help attendees navigate the moving lines of Israel and Palestine under the influence of President Donald Trump, described as a “complex and convoluted matrix of separation, inequality and asymmetric control.” The program is 3-5pm Saturday, April 8, at Monterey Peace and Justice Center. 899-7322.
- The Foundation for Monterey County Free Libraries has received $100,000 from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation to support countywide literacy efforts over the next two years. Long live reading!
