• On Halloween, if you bring your child to the Oldtown Book Nook (521 S. Main St., Salinas), they’ll get a free children’s book that’s way more nourishing than a Now & Later. But if the kid is wearing a costume, they’ll also get candy—and if that candy is Bazooka Joe, they can read it, too. 540-4315.

• Monterey Regional Airport Art Gallery (200 Fred Kane Drive, Monterey) seems to specialize of late in the historical and archaic. Wind, Wiggle & Wonder: A Toy Show is made up of bygone playthings (one of the items is a game called Tiddly Winks) from the “collections” of Ted CalhoonCarol StormLee Trotter and others, paired with a film about the world of wind-up toys from Mac & Ava Motion Pictures. In the adjoining Youth Gallery, 5th graders submit their art for the Hospice Foundation’s “Tributes in Art” competition. It opens 5-7pm Friday, 624-7910, ilenetuttle@aol.com.

• You don’t need an excuse to visit the eclectic and random charm of Moss Landing, but in case you need more convincing: Haute Enchilada’s Galeria Dos is hosting a holiday party with music by Pankind Calypso Jazz, hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and art galore 4-6pm Saturday, partly benefiting the Food Bank for Monterey County. 633-5843.

• Lyn Whiting and Richaed Boynton, who paired up last year on Glorious!Magic Circle Theatre’s funny homage to soprano singer Florence Foster Jenkins, find each other again 5pm Saturday at MPC Studio Theater (980 Fremont St., Monterey), this time in readings of selected plays from the collection of local playwright and MPC adjunct professor Lee Brady, whose Random Acts of Love was performed at last year’s San Francisco Fringe Festival. 646-4213, 402-8211.

• The group is not new; they’ve been around for more than a year. The idea predates religion. Sort of. The Monterey County Atheists meet 6pm every first Sunday of the month at Cafe Trieste (409 Alvarado St., Monterey) for conversation on history, science, politics and culture. They promise laughs. 675-3234, jmscearce@yahoo.com.

• The Farallon Recorder Quartet opened two weeks of early music master classes at Hidden Valley (88 W Carmel Valley Road, Carmel Valley) on Oct. 27, but the “minifest” is spiked with another performance. On Sunday, 7:30pm, new East Bay ensemble Calextone performs a lovely concert of French Medieval composers Machaut, Solage, Binchois and Busnois. Calextone employ voices, harp, vielle, dulcimer, recorder and doucaine to transport listeners. $20, 659-3115.
