Galley Sur invites the public to an exciting and festive afternoon, celebrating the installation of this important piece, titled “Keeping The Freedom,” and unveiling new sculptures by the world-renowned Shona stone sculptor Agnes Nyanhongo (1-3pm Sunday, July 21). The Zimbabwean stone sculptor is a native of Nyanga, and she is the daughter of first-generation sculptor Claud Nyanhongo and sister of Gedion Nyanhongo. She spent much time helping in her father’s studio as a girl and began sculpting full-time in 1980. Stylistically, Nyanhongo’s work is very similar to that of her father and takes as its theme mainly female issues. Oprah Winfrey and Maya Angelou are among the many owners of her pieces.
