Tucked among the artful images of boba, matcha latte and horchata drinks on the menu screen at Lilikoi Boba Monterey Bay is slush that is rather simple in appearance.
Lovebug is the color of Valentine’s Day – deep red and soft pink, a holiday offering that remains on the menu. And while it may not dazzle the eye like some of the ube, passion fruit or butterfly pea creations, there is much to admire about this icy blast. It starts with a creamy touch to the puree that cushions the fresh, vibrant sensation of strawberry. It’s bright, cheerful and frosty enough to pierce a sultry Hawaiian afternoon. Indeed, a floral, tropical tone to the flavor profile hints at idle distraction.
Yet lurking behind the frolicking berries is a dry, bitter, herbaceous note that keeps the refreshing treat in balance and lends a quiet solemnity – not enough to interrupt the spree, but certainly enough to provide a stern adult an excuse for a little slushy fun. And although the color palette suggests a syrupy drink, the sweetness is restrained. There is thought to the recipe. A strong pour of jasmine green tea gives the Lovebug its savory bite while a squirt of lemon adds a brash edge. But the fruit remains playful throughout.
The little shop prides itself on boba, matcha and horchata creations, encouraging guests to go bold. Like the other drinks crafted at Lilikoi, one can add from a list of toppings. However, Lovebug is best kept as is.
