At first glance, the $19.95 Cotton Candy Burrito at Scoops Ice Cream Parlor in Monterey gives one pause. It’s a massive concoction of three scoops of ice cream, two toppings and a serving of cereal wrapped in freshly spun, colorful cotton candy. This is a must-share, photogenic dessert with friends and family both in real life and online. The warm cotton candy becomes a perfect complement to the cold ice cream in a taste and texture combination you never knew you were missing. The cereal adds a fun crunch, the toppings pops of flavor.
There are 10 flavors of cotton candy to choose from – mainly of the fruity variety but also chocolate and pink vanilla – and although the menu says you may pick two flavors, you’re allowed as many as you want. For the ice cream, choose from 16 flavors, 15 toppings (Pop Rocks cost extra but are a customer favorite) and six types of cereal.
Construction of the burrito is a form of entertainment in and of itself, as the parlor scooper spins the first cloud of cotton candy, loading it into a cradle, followed by the ice cream and toppings, then a second spin of colored sugar.
If the burrito is too big to contemplate, consider the Cotton Candy Galaxy, a balancing act of two flavors of each ingredient. The Cotton Candy Cloud is a smaller version of the Galaxy.
