It’s fall and that means pumpkin spice, right? Although Captain + Stoker offers twists on the ubiquitous seasoning, they’ve also decided to take a turn for something literally darker and spookier, in the form of the Dark Matter black matcha latte.
At first glance, what you see is pewter powdered matcha in a jar, but this quickly turns to black when milk of any kind is added, reminiscent of deep space. The latte is made by mixing the powdered tea with water, milk and charcoal powder and can be served either hot or cold.
“We wanted to have something unique and spooky for Halloween,” barista Dawn Sherman says. The beverage was concocted by General Manager Ev Cantu.
The matcha powder itself has an aroma of English Breakfast tea. On the palate, the iced version is light and a bit floral. These flavors are amplified in its hot counterpart. The cold drink is served in a clear glass, fully displaying the swirls of milk among the darkness as it seeps into the liquid. Served hot in a ceramic cup, baristas show off their latte art skills, yielding a dark pastel garnish. The tea itself is lightly sweetened with cane sugar.
Charcoal powder is used for the visual effect. But the ingredient is a signature for Captain + Stoker’s Halloween homage. For those who shun the autumnal coffee accoutrement, here’s a fun alternative that will still wake you up as the days get shorter.
