Monterey Police Chief Dave Hober announces retirement.

After nearly four decades in law enforcement and 12 years with the Monterey Police Department, Police Chief Dave Hober announced that he is retiring and will end his service on Nov. 15.

“Serving as Monterey’s Chief of Police has been the distinct privilege and honor of my professional life,” Hober said in a statement. “The men and women of the Monterey Police Department, both sworn officers and support staff, are among the most dedicated, compassionate and skilled public servants in the profession.”

Hober began his career with the Monterey Police Department in 2015 following 25 years with the San Jose Police Department. Hober also served as an FBI Special Agent from 1996-1997.

Hober will be taking a position in the private sector, which he described as aligning with his planned retirement from policing. In the coming months, the City will begin a search for Hober’s successor.

“Under Chief Hober’s leadership, our police department has exemplified what it means to deliver community-based law enforcement," Monterey City Manager Dante Hall said in a statement. “We will miss his expertise, leadership, professionalism and collaborative approach.”

Hober reiterated that the success of the Monterey Police Department comes with the collective action of those officers, “patrolling our streets, working in the city jail, conducting investigations, managing records, supporting operations and engaging directly with our community.”

He extended his gratitude to the members of the department and city residents for the "privilege of serving this exceptional community.”

“With the strength and leadership of Assistant Chief Mike Bruno and our current command staff, I step away knowing the future of the Monterey Police Department is in outstanding hands,” he said.
