Colton Hall in Monterey

Colton Hall in Monterey, where the Monterey City Council meets.

After a months-long search and recent weeks of interviews, Monterey City Council members picked who they would like to be the next city manager.

On Jan. 20, the council during its closed session meeting voted unanimously to make a conditional offer to a candidate, City Attorney Christine Davi said during the public portion of the meeting.

Because it is a personnel matter, the candidate’s name is unknown. Mayor Tyller Williamson declined to comment further than what was publicly announced at the meeting.

Davi said the candidate’s contract is expected to come before the council during a public discussion on Feb. 3.

The next city manager will replace Hans Uslar, who retired at the end of 2025 after 28 years with Monterey, seven of which he served as city manager.

Retired Monterey County Administrative Officer Lew Bauman is currently serving as interim city manager.
