Fire at Casanova Plaza Apartments (copy)

A fire at an apartment complex on Casanova Avenue was extinguished through a multi-agency response on Monday, March 9. 

Monterey City officials confirmed that one of the eight residents of Casanova Plaza apartments who were hospitalized following the three-alarm fire that occurred in the early morning on Monday, March 9, died from their injuries. 

Six of the residents were taken to the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula and were in stable condition as of Monday, while two residents were transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center’s Burn Unit in San Jose for care. 

According to records from the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner, a 95-year-old woman hailing from the 93940 zip code died at 12:38pm on Monday, March 9, from "complications following thermal burns, smoke and soot inhalation injuries."

Her identity has not yet been released.
