Jeffrey Weiss

The chef who gave Pacific Grove an epicurean enema, in the jeninni kitchen with trademark charcuterie.

Chef Jeffrey Weiss is hilarious. Look no further than a recent Q&A where he told me his normal breakfast is Excedrin Migraine.

Weiss is also a former world-class figure skater, which is part of the reason he's such a gifted chef.

He is also one of the leading charcuterie authorities in the country, and author of Charcurtería: The Soul of Spain, an ambitious tome well worth its James Beard nominations.

And, now, he is outta here.

OK, he's not leaving the area yet, but he has resigned his post at jeninni kitchen + wine bar, the 20-month-old restaurant that has reinvigorated sleepy Pacific Grove dining.

He has not committed to any other post—or much of anything—other than catching up on sleep.

"I forgot what sleeping in feels like," he says.

While he tinkers with some book ideas—"clacketing around on the keyboard"—he leaves things in good hands at jeninni, so to speak, with his "right and left hands" Trevor Mathiak and Kristian Sension.

"I'm so proud of the work we did in the last 20 months," he says, "bringing this cool idea to Pacific Grove and the Monterey Peninsula.

"I'm just taking some time to evaluate options.

"And get some sleep."

Look for more here on his next move soon.
