Artist David Ligare's thrown drapery paintings, landscapes, still life and sculptures are rooted in classicism. Beautifully proportional, they are full, sunny, vital and balanced—and widely admired in the U.S. and abroad.
The works of Ligare’s partner of 50 years, ceramicist Gary Smith, is arguably less known, even if Smith casts long shadows at Hartnell College—he is a retired Hartnell College professor of ceramics and former director of the Hartnell College Art Gallery. This is the first time Ligare and Smith are displaying their works together.
The show, titled Order and Chaos, gathers drawings by Ligare and ceramic sculpture by Smith, and opens Thursday, Sept. 10 at the Hartnell College Art Gallery. The reception is 4-6pm on Thursday, Sept. 10. Both artists will be present at the opening, offering visitors the opportunity to meet them and experience the exhibition with the artists in attendance.
The event is free and open to the public. Free street parking is available on West Alisal Street. Paid parking is available in Parking Lot 4.
